About

Silvia Masiero is a PhD candidate in Information Systems at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She is also a Research Affiliate at the Centre of Development Studies (CDS) Trivandrum, India, for the current academic year 2011/2012.

Silvia has a degree in Economics of International Markets and the New Technologies, awarded with honors by Bocconi University (Milan), and a Master of Science in Development Management, awarded with Distinction by LSE. From her field experiences in Palestine (2008 onwards), Jordan (2009), Togo (2010), Lebanon and Sierra Leone (2011), Silvia has derived her approach to development, as inseparable from the direct knowledge of human and geopolitical contexts of intervention. This perspective is embodied in her PhD work on the impact of digital technologies on the Indian Public Distribution System (PDS), the biggest anti-poverty net in the Indian subcontinent. Bridging the intrinsically diverse spheres of information systems and development management, Silvia is trying to assess the role of ICTs in reforming the PDS at the state level, and the mechanisms through which the state-citizen interactions in this anti-poverty scheme are reshaped and reconstructed by new technologies.
