Thesis Title: Rethinking the liberal peace: anti-colonial thought and post-war intervention in Mozambique

Mark Hoffman

About

As of September 2011, I am an LSE Fellow in the International Relations department.

My PhD thesis (passed March 2011) develops a critique of the debate on the 'liberal peace' in the IR literature, mainly drawing its inspiration from post-colonial / decolonising political thinkers. This critique revolves around the failure to conceptualise the subjects of liberal peace as diverse actors with meaningful historical and political agency. Furthermore, the existing debate does not engage the problematic of multifaceted and intersecting modes of domination. I make a case for the importance of situated empirical research in this approach and explore the case of Mozambique using the lenses previously developed.

Beyond the thesis, I have general interests in the application of critical political theory in IR, in particular the work of thinkers associated with the post-colonial and subaltern studies traditions, the debates around 'Africa', 'development' and 'aid', the conceptualisation of political violence and peace processes, qualitative methodologies and the debates around IR as a social science.

I teach on the Conflict and Peace Studies Master's Course in the IR Department which is a wide-ranging theoretical and empirical engagement with theories of conflict and approaches to peace and peacebuilding.

I also co-edited Volume 37 of Millennium: Journal of International Studies, and am working on two edited book volumes at present.
