The academic discourse surrounding the rise and subsequent fragmentation of the JI is well-trodden, often applauding the Indonesian government's efforts to infiltrate and dismantle local cells, as well as cracking down on the financial ties with international terror networks. However, the discovery of a jihadist training camp in Aceh in February 2010 and rising numbers of Indonesian nationals travelling to Iraq and Syria to fight with the Islamic State have made the triumphalist claims of the Indonesian success story ring hollow.
